Dongdaemun-gu is building a water sports experience and education center in Jungnangcheon in line with Seoul City’s ‘ Great Han River Project ‘ . This project is designed to provide new leisure activities and educational opportunities for children and youth and local residents by utilizing the natural environment in the city .

Dongdaemun-gu plans to build a water sports experience and education center in the 5th Sports Park of Jungnangcheon ( underneath Ihwa Bridge , 352-2 Imun-dong ) by 2025 .
Through this , it will be transformed into a space where local residents can directly experience and enjoy water sports such as kayaking and swan boating . In particular, the district aims to provide children and youth with unique experiences and create opportunities for emotional stability and growth .
Jungnangcheon is a representative urban river in the northeastern part of Seoul and a space where you can enjoy leisure activities all year round . Dongdaemun-gu is trying to provide new value to residents by utilizing the natural environment of Jungnangcheon .
Dongdaemun-gu received the first river use permit in Seoul from the Ministry of Environment’s Han River Basin Environmental Office to promote this project . On October 21 , the district completed a review of the stability of the natural environment and a preliminary test run for the creation of an experiential education center .
According to the test results , the water depth of the experiential education center is maintained at a stable level of 70 cm at the edge and 70-120 cm in the center . The current was suitable for board operation without shaking , and the water quality was also evaluated as ‘ very good ‘ ( as of November 2024 , Jungnangcheon Environment Center, Seoul ). The bottom is composed of soft sand, making it highly safe , and the ecosystem, where various fish species such as carp live, is also in good condition .
Dongdaemun-gu hopes that the Jungnangcheon Water Sports Experience Education Center will become a complex space where all local residents can enjoy and learn together, rather than just a simple sports space . Children and youth will be able to experience and challenge new things through water sports here , and this is expected to be an opportunity to help with emotional stability and self-growth .
Meanwhile , it plans to revitalize the local community by providing healthy leisure activities for adults . Through these efforts, the district presented a vision to transform Dongdaemun-gu into a vibrant area where nature and people live in harmony .
Dongdaemun-gu Mayor Lee Pil-hyung emphasized that the Jungnangcheon Water Sports Experience Education Center will go beyond being a simple leisure space and will also serve as an educational city for future generations . He said , “ We will actively utilize the natural, friendly space of Jungnangcheon to provide emotional stability and opportunities for growth for children and youth , and provide residents with healthy leisure activities that they can enjoy in their daily lives . ”
Dongdaemun-gu’s project is in line with Seoul City’s ‘ Great Han River Project ‘ and is expected to be an important opportunity to transform Jungnangcheon from a simple river to an urban hub where culture, sports , and education come together.
