Goyang Special City (Mayor Lee Dong-hwan) announced that it held the final report meeting for the ‘Basic Plan and Feasibility Study for the Construction of a Goyang City Specialized Science Museum’ at the Open Market Room of Goyang City Hall on the 24th.

On this day, the report meeting was attended by Mayor Lee Dong-hwan of Goyang City, Director Choi Young-soo of the Self-sufficient City Realization Bureau, Director Lee Byeong-yeong of the Future Industry Division, and experts from related organizations such as the National Museum of Korea, POSTECH Science and Technology Promotion Center, and Hongik University, who held in-depth discussions on the plan to build a science museum.

◆ Proposal of direction for construction of cat-type specialized science museum

This research project focused on developing a plan to build a specialized science museum in Goyang City, reflecting the Ministry of Science and ICT’s science museum construction policy and 12 national strategic technologies.

According to the research results, the Goyang-type Science Museum will be organized around themes related to Goyang City’s representative industries, such as broadcasting, video, and content industries. Through this, the plan is to strengthen the connection with local industries and convey the practical value of science and technology to citizens.

In addition, we focused on establishing a **’Goyang City Customized Science Museum Construction Roadmap’** that comprehensively considers the optimal site review, exhibition space configuration, project cost analysis by construction scale, and policy and economic ripple effects.

◆ Goal of eliminating the gap in science and culture

Currently, Goyang City is the only special city in northern Gyeonggi Province, but it lacks science and technology experience and education spaces. On the other hand, southern Gyeonggi Province is meeting its demand for science and culture centered around the National Gwacheon Science Museum, so the northwestern part of the metropolitan area is relatively neglected.

Goyang City plans to resolve this gap by establishing a science museum to expand the science culture infrastructure linked to local industries and to lead science education and popularization.

◆ Expected effects through the establishment of a science museum

The Goyang Science Museum is expected to go beyond a simple exhibition space and play a role in providing citizens with opportunities to experience science, linking cutting-edge technology with industry, establishing a science education platform for youth, and revitalizing the local economy.

Mayor Lee Dong-hwan of Goyang City said, “We will lead the popularization of scientific culture and the development of cutting-edge technology industries through the establishment of the Goyang Science Museum,” and “Based on the results of this research project, we will create an original and expandable science museum to provide citizens with a new scientific culture experience.”

◆ Support from the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Status of Establishing Science Museums Nationwide

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Science and ICT is currently promoting the establishment of the Wonju Medical and Life Science Museum in Gangwon Province, the Ulsan Carbon Neutral Science Museum, and the Pohang Earth and Ocean Science Museum. In line with these government policies, Goyang City plans to build specialized science museums that fit the characteristics of the region and contribute to the spread of scientific culture.
