Songpa-gu (District Mayor Seo Kang-seok) announced that it will conduct intensive pest control from December 9 to March 17 next year to respond to the increase in mosquito activity during the winter.
According to the district, controlling one mosquito larva has the effect of eliminating 500 to 700 adult mosquitoes. Recently, due to climate change and the development of indoor heating facilities, mosquitoes continue to be active even in winter, and the importance of controlling wintering mosquitoes is becoming more prominent.
Accordingly, Songpa-gu is conducting mosquito habitat surveys and control at a total of 520 locations, including large buildings, apartments, accommodation facilities, and schools. The specialized control team is focusing on surveying places where mosquito larvae are likely to live, such as septic tanks and water wells, and is spraying control using specialized chemicals targeting adults and larvae.
The mosquito density and habitat information identified during the investigation will be used to establish future quarantine plans.
In addition, the city is sending out notices to 1,149 locations subject to disinfection obligations, including apartment complexes, lodging facilities, hospitals, and large stores, so that facility managers can carry out disinfection themselves, and is actively promoting the importance of mosquito control in winter.
Songpa-gu is focusing on preventing mosquito-borne infectious diseases and improving the living environment of residents through this quarantine.
Songpa-gu District Mayor Seo Kang-seok emphasized, “The importance of mosquito control in winter is increasing due to climate change,” and “Through this intensive control, we will systematically manage wintering mosquitoes and their habitats to protect residents’ health from mosquito-borne infectious diseases in summer.”
Songpa-gu plans to create a pleasant and safe living environment through continuous mosquito habitat management and control.
