Yongin Special City announced on the 26th that it signed a business agreement with the police, fire department, and local medical institutions and will operate a ’24-hour psychiatric emergency public hospital bed’ starting in January next year. This public hospital bed is a facility to prevent accidents caused by mental illness in advance and to protect the safety of citizens in emergency situations, and it will be operated year-round at Yongin Mental Hospital.
The police will promptly protect patients requiring emergency hospitalization in accordance with the Mental Health and Welfare Act, and the fire department will support on-site dispatch and transport. Yongin Mental Hospital provides 24-hour emergency care, and Yongin City Mental Health and Welfare Center is responsible for the aftercare of discharged patients.
According to statistics from the Yongin East and West Police Stations, the number of requests for psychiatric emergency hospitalization has increased significantly from 58 in 2022 to 147 this year, but many cases have been difficult on site due to the lack of hospitals that can accommodate patients at night and on holidays. Accordingly, Mayor Lee Sang-il has decided to quickly promote the operation of public hospital beds by reflecting requests from the police, fire department, and medical institutions.
The city enacted a related ordinance last October to establish a legal basis for public hospital bed support, and designated Yongin Mental Hospital as a designated medical institution for psychiatric emergency hospitalization. This hospital bed is only available to Yongin citizens, and provides emergency treatment and hospitalization services for the safety of citizens.
Mayor Lee Sang-il said, “We have urgently secured public hospital beds to prevent accidents and emergencies caused by mental illness,” adding, “This will be a good policy model to protect the safety of citizens through public-private cooperation.”
