The Seoul Mental Health and Welfare Center is drawing attention by supporting the ‘2024 School-Visiting Social-Emotional Education’ program to improve the mental health and social-emotional capacity of children and adolescents. This program includes various educational courses to help students recognize and control their emotions.
The core of this program is ‘Smim, Surfing the Wave of Emotions’, which is an emotional regulation program for upper grades of elementary school. The Seoul Center developed this program in 2021, and based on dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), it aims to foster students’ ability to effectively understand and manage their emotions. In the pilot operation that started in 2022, students reportedly showed positive responses that their emotional regulation skills improved.

This program, carried out in cooperation with the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, provided faculty training to a total of eight teacher learning communities and conducted classroom education for 14 classes, together with mental health and welfare centers in six autonomous districts of Seoul (Gangnam-gu Mental Health and Welfare Center, Gangdong-gu Mental Health and Welfare Center, Gangbuk-gu Mental Health and Welfare Center, Dongdaemun-gu Mental Health and Welfare Center, Yeongdeungpo-gu Mental Health and Welfare Center, and Jung-gu Mental Health and Welfare Center).
Elementary school teachers showed a high desire for various social-emotional education, and it is expected that the emotional support system in the classroom will be strengthened through this education. Students who participated in the education conducted in 14 classes showed high satisfaction after learning about emotional recognition and regulation methods.
“Mental health issues in children and adolescents can have lasting effects on them as they become adults,” said Lee Seung-yeon, deputy director of the Seoul Center. “Through this program, we will help students learn mental health management skills in their daily lives and further develop healthy relationships in society.”
Since its establishment in 2005, the Seoul Mental Health and Welfare Center has operated various programs to improve the mental health of Seoul citizens and prevent mental illness. It also plans to continue to lead the way in promoting the mental health of children and adolescents through continued research and support.
