Meta has appointed Joel Kaplan, a pro-Republican, as its head of global policy ahead of the inauguration of Donald Trump’s second term. The appointment replaces Nick Clegg, a former British deputy prime minister, and is seen as a move to strengthen ties with the Trump administration.

Prior to joining Meta, Kaplan served as deputy chief of staff for policy in the George W. Bush administration and had close ties to the first Trump administration. He served as president-elect Trump’s 2024 entourage and worked with Vice President-elect J.D. Vance and Treasury Secretary nominee Scott Bessent.
Kaplan’s previous position as vice president of public policy will be filled by Kevin Martin, a former Bush administration official who previously served as chairman of the Federal Communications Commission.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has been active in restoring relations since Trump was elected. He restored Trump’s Facebook account last year and even called him to console him after an assassination attempt. He also visited Trump’s Florida home for Thanksgiving dinner and donated $1 million to his inauguration fund, showing his closeness.
The appointment appears to signal Meta’s intention to strengthen ties with the Trump administration and move closer to the Republican Party’s policy direction.
