Mayor Lee Sang-il of Yongin Special City appeared on OBS Radio on the 27th and said that the fact that the Yongin Advanced System Semiconductor National Industrial Complex received final approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport 1 year and 9 months after it was announced in March of last year was “an unprecedented and groundbreaking event in the history of industrial complexes,” and evaluated it as a result of cooperation between the government and local governments.

The market said, “Usually, it takes more than four and a half years for a national industrial complex to be approved, but Yongin received approval in the shortest period of time thanks to the exemption from the preliminary feasibility study and the fast track environmental impact assessment.” As a result, the national industrial complex site in the Idong and Namsa areas expanded from the existing 2.15 million pyeong to a total of 2.35 million pyeong, including 150,000 pyeong for the relocated company industrial complex and 110,000 pyeong for the relocated housing area.

Samsung Electronics will invest 360 trillion won in the Idong and Namsa National Industrial Complexes and 20 trillion won in the Giheung Campus, while SK Hynix will invest 122 trillion won in the Wonsam-myeon Semiconductor Cluster. The total amount of semiconductor-related investment in Yongin will amount to 502 trillion won.

The market emphasized that “the ecosystem is expanding further as global semiconductor equipment companies such as ASML and Lam Research move into Yongin.” SK Hynix will begin construction of its first fab in March next year, and ASML Korea will invest 36 billion won in the Yongin Cluster Collaboration Complex to provide equipment monitoring and personnel support.

In addition, Tokyo Electron is building an R&D center in the Wonsam General Industrial Complex, and Samsung Electronics’ partner Semes is investing 255.6 billion won to create an R&D facility in the Giheung Future City Advanced Industrial Complex.

Yongin plans to open Gyeonggi Province’s first semiconductor high school in 2027 to foster semiconductor experts. It is also focusing on fostering cutting-edge technology personnel by operating an education/industry-academia hub within the city hall in cooperation with UNIST.

The market reported that “in order to secure world-class competitiveness in semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment, the government and SK Hynix plan to invest 1 trillion won to establish a mini-fab in the Wonsam cluster,” explaining that this will allow for technology testing and verification of mass production possibilities, thereby increasing the competitiveness of companies.

This national industrial complex approval is expected to be an important milestone for Yongin to establish itself as a global semiconductor hub. Mayor Lee Sang-il stated his vision, saying, “Once these projects are completed, Yongin will have the world’s largest semiconductor ecosystem as a single city.”
