Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, announced comprehensive measures to prevent large-scale crowd accidents that could occur at Yeouido Hangang Park. The district plans to expand the operation of the smart safety management system and improve the overall pedestrian environment.
Yeouido Hangang Park is a local landmark where large-scale events such as the annual Spring Flower Festival and Seoul World Fireworks Festival are held, attracting numerous citizens. Accordingly, Yeongdeungpo-gu decided to focus on eliminating safety blind spots so that citizens can safely visit the park.

In particular, the area in front of the Yeouinaru Station exit is a crowded area for citizens and tourists. To address this, the district built a ‘crowd detection CCTV’ and ‘AI-based automatic broadcasting system’ in December of last year that can analyze crowd density in real time. This system analyzes crowd density in real time to set a warning level, and when crowds increase, it plays a role in encouraging citizens to voluntarily disperse crowds through warning broadcasts.
In addition, the district has improved pedestrian safety by completing the pedestrian environment improvement project on Yeouido-ro and Yeouiseo-ro last year. It has completed the installation of removable pedestrian guardrails, anti-slip paving, relocation of distribution boxes on narrow pedestrian walkways, and removal of banner posts. It is also in the process of expanding the sidewalk on the south side of Mapo Bridge to a maximum of 6.7m. These efforts are expected to be completed before the upcoming Spring Flower Festival.
Yeongdeungpo-gu District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon emphasized, “Prevention and response to crowd accidents are of the utmost importance,” and “We will do our best to ensure that all citizens visiting Yeouido Hangang Park can enjoy it safely and comfortably by systematically managing safety and improving the pedestrian environment through cutting-edge technology and infrastructure.”
In this way, Yeongdeungpo-gu aims to continuously improve the pedestrian environment, implement policies that prioritize the safety of citizens, and provide a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
