About 30 residents of Bora-dong, Giheung-gu attended the event and showed great interest in the project.
Mayor Lee Sang-il explained, “The Bundang Line extension project was reflected in the 4th National Railway Network Construction Plan in 2021, but since then, the project has been at a standstill, causing many concerns among local residents.” He added, “Since the 8th local government election, Yongin Special City has focused on increasing the economic feasibility of the project.”

The market cited the attraction of Samsung Electronics’ 360 trillion won advanced system semiconductor national industrial complex in March 2023 and the confirmation of the development plan for the Idong public housing district (16,000 households) and Osan Segyo New Town (31,000 households) as major achievements. He emphasized, “The development of national industrial complexes and new towns has been a key driving force in increasing the economic feasibility of the Bundang Line extension project.”
The market also said, “As a result of continuously persuading the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Korea Railroad Corporation about the economic feasibility and legitimacy of the project, the Korea Railroad Corporation completed a preliminary feasibility study last year, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has requested the Ministry of Strategy and Finance to review a preliminary feasibility study,” and “the project is gradually progressing.”
The market especially emphasized the city’s efforts, saying, “If Yongin City had not actively pursued large-scale development projects, including the semiconductor project, the Bundang Line extension project would still have remained at a standstill.”
He also introduced the government consultation process related to the construction of the railway network, saying, “Last year, I met with the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and vice ministers to actively explain the necessity of constructing major railway networks, including the extension of the Bundang Line, the extension of the Gyeonggang Line, and the Gyeonggi Southern Metropolitan Railway, and requested their support.”
The Bundang Line extension project is approximately 16.9km from Giheung Station to Osan University Station, and the total project cost is expected to be approximately 1.6015 trillion won. When this project is completed, it is expected to improve the transportation conditions in the Idong and Namsa areas, and greatly contribute to regional development by linking with large-scale development projects.
At the meeting that day, residents listened to a detailed explanation of the project progress and expressed various opinions. One resident said, “The extension of the Bundang Line is essential for solving traffic congestion and regional development,” and “I expect the project to proceed quickly since the city has actively stepped up.”
The mayor concluded the meeting by promising, “We will do our best to ensure that Yongin’s railway network construction plan, including the Bundang Line extension project, meets citizens’ expectations.”
