Uijeongbu City (Mayor Kim Dong-geun) announced on the 2nd that it has decided to preserve 16 existing buildings in order to create a ‘design cluster’ at Camp Red Cloud (CRC). This decision was finalized after collecting opinions from citizens and experts based on the plan established in July of last year and after consultation with the Ministry of National Defense.

The buildings to be preserved are comprised of historically and culturally valuable facilities such as the commander’s office, chapel, bunker, and training center. With the cooperation of the Ministry of National Defense, the plan is to utilize buildings in non-contaminated areas, and additional soil contamination surveys will be conducted to finalize whether to preserve them.

Jong-seong Ahn, head of the Urban Design Division, emphasized, “Camp Red Cloud is a symbolic location of ROK-US security that was born from the Korean War, and a space that contains modern and contemporary history,” and “Through the design cluster, we will return it to the citizens as a creative and meaningful space that connects the past and the future.”

The Ministry of National Defense plans to proceed with demolition in the second half of this year to remove soil contamination in the returned land, but is continuing cooperation to respect the possibility of using the existing buildings.
