Goyang Special City (Mayor Lee Dong-hwan) announced that it has secured a total of 40 relics of high historical value through the public purchase of relics from public museums that has been conducted since last September. These relics are related to the Imjin War and Byeokjegwan, and are evaluated as valuable cultural heritages that represent the history and identity of Goyang City.
◆ Introduction to major purchased artifacts
Among the relics purchased this time are the gold-inlaid Epihwan sword used during the Imjin War and the matchlock gun with the character ‘訓’ (Hun) engraved on it. These are valuable weapons that were personally manufactured and used by generals in the mid-Joseon Dynasty, and are considered to be of very high historical rarity.
Also included are historical records related to Goyang City, such as the rare edition of ‘The Complete Collection of Doctrine of the Mean’ published in Bukhansanseong Fortress, and inscriptions related to Hong Sang-han, Seong Geun-muk, and eunuchs.
Here, various records showing the flow of modern and contemporary history, such as materials related to the Byeokjegwan during the Japanese colonial period and materials related to the Gyeongui Line railroad, were secured.
With this purchase of relics, Goyang City now possesses a total of 1,240 museum collections.

Goyang Special City Mayor Lee Dong-hwan said, “This purchase of relics is a meaningful achievement that has secured valuable cultural heritage containing the history and identity of Goyang City,” and emphasized, “Through the establishment of a public museum in the future, these relics will be actively utilized for exhibitions, education, and academic research.”
◆ Future use plans
Goyang City plans to actively utilize the relics acquired this time for exhibition materials at the public museum to be built in the future, academic research, and educational programs. Through this, it plans to provide citizens with an opportunity to experience the history and culture of Goyang City.
◆ Donation of relics and expansion of cooperation
The city has been negotiating to transfer buried heritage excavated in Goyang City from other organizations, and is also actively promoting a campaign to donate materials related to Goyang City.
