Seongnam City announced on the 3rd that it will abolish the twice-monthly collection system for household waste. This is a measure to solve the problems of waste pile-up and hygiene caused by local residents confusing the biweekly collection date with the non-collection date.

The city had been designating the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of every month as days off for sanitation workers from cleaning service companies since January 2023, but decided to abolish this system and improve it in a new way to resolve inconveniences to citizens and local environmental issues.

According to the improved plan, 50% of the sanitation workers will work every Saturday to collect trash. The plan is to guarantee 2-3 days off per month for 523 sanitation workers from 17 cleaning agencies in Seongnam City, while maintaining the Saturday work system to solve the trash loading problem.

The city plans to gradually introduce a five-day workweek after strengthening public awareness among residents to refrain from throwing out trash on Friday evenings and raising awareness of guaranteed holidays for sanitation workers.

A Seongnam City official said, “This abolition of the garbage collection system is the first step toward reducing inconvenience to citizens and improving the working environment of sanitation workers,” and added, “We will create a cleaner and more pleasant Seongnam City through waste disposal management and cooperation with residents.”

Through this measure, the city plans to improve the city’s environmental sanitation level and establish advanced cleaning administration that satisfies both citizens and sanitation workers.
