Ulsan City Leads Manufacturing Innovation through Advanced Automobile Industry

Ulsan Metropolitan City has launched a full-scale project to develop core AI autonomous manufacturing technologies based on software-defined factories (SDFs) with the goal of advancing the automobile industry. This project was promoted after being selected for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s AI autonomous manufacturing leading project competition in 2024, and through this, Ulsan is accelerating the digital transformation and intelligence of the manufacturing industry.

This project aims to develop optimized autonomous manufacturing operation technology by connecting various production elements of automobile manufacturing plants with data. Stein, Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), Korea Institute of Industrial Technology, Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials, Korea University of Technology and Education, and Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) are in charge of research and development, and Hyundai Motor Company is participating as a technology verification demander.

Ulsan City began full-scale research activities by holding a training session and technology exchange meeting at the Westin Chosun Busan from December 9th to 10th. At the event, presentations and Q&A sessions by research leaders were held, and the latest technologies for building an autonomous manufacturing platform were discussed.

Stegen, in charge of the overall business, is in charge of developing the online system-based technology of the SDF platform, and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute plans to strengthen corporate support by establishing a real-virtual linked test and autonomous manufacturing technology support center. The Korea Institute of Industrial Technology and the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials are developing metamodels and process control technologies, while UNIST and Korea University of Technology and Education are developing manufacturing optimization technology using artificial intelligence.

Hyundai Motor Company plans to conduct a demonstration of SDF-based autonomous manufacturing technology at its new electric vehicle plant in Ulsan, which is currently under construction with an investment of approximately KRW 2 trillion. This demonstration is expected to increase the efficiency and intelligence of the automobile production process and strengthen competitiveness in the global market.

Ulsan City will establish an AI autonomous manufacturing technology support center with the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute and provide process improvement and technology consulting to small and medium-sized enterprises. Through this, Ulsan will promote the digital transformation of local manufacturers and grow into a center for smart manufacturing.
