Yongin Special City announced on the 5th that the Dongbaek District in Giheung-gu was newly designated as a self-driving car demonstration operation area by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. A self-driving car demonstration operation area is an area where regulatory exceptions are applied to promote research and demonstration operations of self-driving technology. In the designated area, regulations on paid passenger transportation, automobile safety standards, and cargo transportation can be relaxed.
The area designated this time is the Dongbaek 2-dong area, including the 3.0km section connecting Dongbaek Station, Dongbaek Mart, Dongbaek Library, and Dongbaek Station, and the 0.6km section from the main gate to the back gate of Yongin Severance Hospital.
The city plans to first introduce autonomous buses and use Dongbaek Station as a transportation hub, connecting major areas such as Yongin Severance Hospital, Dongbaek E-Mart, and Dongbaek Library. After that, a step-by-step plan is being established to gradually expand the operating route to the entire Dongbaek-dong area.
In particular, we are seeking ways to improve hospital accessibility through cooperation with Yongin Severance Hospital and focusing on improving citizen convenience through autonomous driving technology.
In addition, Yongin City formed a ‘mobility consortium’ based on cooperation between industry, government, academia, and research institutes in September of last year. 18 organizations including Yongin Special City, Yongin Police Station, Myongji University Industry-Academic Cooperation Group, and SK Telecom are participating in the consortium, and are promoting pilot projects based on cutting-edge technologies such as autonomous driving, PM (personal mobility), and robot delivery.
City officials said, “With the designation of the autonomous driving pilot operation zone as an opportunity, we will work to expand cutting-edge technologies into public services that can provide practical help to citizens’ lives.”
