Jongno-gu (Mayor Jeong Moon-heon) won the Minister’s Award at the “2024 Republic of Korea City Awards” hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on the 29th of last month, making it the only local government in the country to have won the award for 11 consecutive years.

The Republic of Korea City Award is given to local governments that have achieved excellent results by evaluating the sustainability and living infrastructure of the city. This year, the evaluation was conducted on 226 local governments nationwide, based on 51 detailed indicators in 4 categories: ‘Urban Society’, ‘Urban Economy’, ‘Urban Environment’, and ‘Support System’. After the first document evaluation and the second on-site evaluation, 14 excellent local governments were finally selected.

Jongno-gu stood out in the urban economy sector in particular. Specialized projects that reflected regional characteristics were highly evaluated, and a representative example was the designation of the ‘Bukchon Special Management Area’ to limit tourist visitation hours and protect residents’ right to reside. In addition, the operation of the ‘fashion clothing joint brand Illuselle’ introduced to transform the sewing industry into a high value-added industry was noted as an exemplary case of regional economic revitalization.

Jongno-gu’s welfare policy was also positively reflected in the evaluation process. The district established the ‘Jongno Welfare Foundation’ to flexibly respond to residents’ welfare needs and provide customized welfare, contributing to improving the quality of life of local residents.

Mayor Jeong Moon-heon said, “Winning the Republic of Korea City Award for 11 consecutive years was possible thanks to the support of our staff and residents who have worked hard to improve the quality of life for residents,” and added, “We will continue to do our best to maintain Jongno-gu’s urban infrastructure at the highest level and grow into a sustainable city.”

Jongno-gu plans to use this award as an opportunity to further strengthen various policies for the city’s sustainability and economic, social, and environmental harmony.
