Asan City, which has established itself as a sports mecca, successfully held the ‘3rd Ryu Seung-min 2004 Athens Olympics Victory Commemorative National Table Tennis Tournament’ at the Asan City Complex Sports Center for three days from the 12th to the 15th.

This competition was hosted by the Korea Table Tennis Association and organized by the Asan City Table Tennis Association, and about 1,000 student and general table tennis enthusiasts from all over the country gathered together and competed fiercely.

The competition was divided into the student team event, large ball team event, large ball individual event, regular ball team event, and regular ball individual event, and the participants showed off their skills that they had been honing and had a wonderful match to reach the top.

Acting Asan Mayor Cho Il-kyo said at the opening ceremony, “Table tennis is a popular and attractive sport that can be enjoyed by anyone regardless of age or gender,” and added, “I hope this competition will be a valuable opportunity for table tennis enthusiasts across the country to test their skills and passion, interact with each other, and strengthen friendships.” He continued, “For student participants in particular, this will be a valuable experience toward their dream stage, the Olympics,” emphasizing the significance of the competition.

This competition was organized to commemorate former Korea Table Tennis Association President Yoo Seung-min’s gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics and to help Korean table tennis, which had been without a gold medal for 20 years, take a leap forward. Asan City hopes to contribute to expanding the base of table tennis and discovering promising players through the competition, and to create a new opportunity for the development of Korean table tennis.

Participants said, “It was a meaningful time where we could have fun not only competing but also interacting with table tennis enthusiasts from all over the country,” and added, “I hope there will be more competitions like this.”

Meanwhile, Asan City plans to further strengthen its status as a sports city by hosting more national competitions in the future and revitalizing local sports.
